Guanyin Temple, measuring about 24 meters in length, over 10 meters in width and 14 meters in height stands just less than a half kilometer off the coast of the Yangtze River in Ezhou. It is built with red stones and blue bricks,with projecting eaves turning up high like bird bills, skillfully integrated with water-retaining technology and cornerstones.
It is recorded that the temple wasbuilt in 1345.
Guanyin Temple consists of three halls, a tower and a pavilion known as the Zushi Hall, Guanyin Hall, LaojunHall, Chunyang Tower and Guanlan Pavilion. Their interior decorations are characterized by a mixing of elements from Confucianism, Taoism, Mahayana Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism.
The whole structure is typical of the architecture in the southern regions of the Yangtze River. Guanyin Temple is called "the greatest temple on the Yangtze River" because it is the only temple on the Yangtze River that integrates the three belief systems of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism.
