Xishan Mountain (West Mountain), located in the west of Ezhou, is famous for being where King Sun Quan practiced martial arts, handled state documents, spent summers, and worshipped the heavens. Sun built a summer palace on Xishan as a temporary palace. He used the palace as an imperial villa when he lived in Ezhou. The palace was ruined later. A temple called Lingquan is now on the former site of the palace.
In 1998, Ezhou hired experts to redesign the summer palace near the ruins of the original place.Today, the newly built summer palace covers an area of more than 67,000 square meters. The complex comprises four parts: the Hall of State Affairs, the Summer Palace, the Reading Hall, and the Wuchang Pavillion. In addition, there are a number of scenic spots of the Three Kingdoms in the Ezhou Xishan Scenic Area, such as The Stone for Testing Swords, and the Site of Pang Tong Reading Books.
The Wangjiang Pavilion sits on the top of Xishan, facing the ancient battlefield of the Chibi War across the river. Visitors can enjoy a panorama of Ezhou and the Yangtze River.
Another attraction in Xishan is Sun Quan's Coronation Altar. In 229 A.D., Sun declared himself to be the king of the Kingdom of Wu and built an altar on the mountain to worship the heavens. There one can see the Yangtze River winding through the city and boats sailing on it.
